International Workshop on IEM Approaches and Application

Background
As a major environmental issue threatening human being’s livelihood and development, land degradation has attracted extensive attention from international communities. Combating land degradation, maintaining ecosystem security and achievement of the sustainable development has become a common task worldwide in the 21st century. The world has made persistent efforts in pursuit of the most effective approaches to combat land degradation.

Nearly 40% of China’s lands are dryland and they provide homesteads for 100 million people, most of whom are poor and rural people of ethnic minorities. The increasingly severe land degradation has caused many problems to the economy, society and ecology of these areas. Land degradation has affected the production, the livelihood and the environmental quality of nearly a quarter of China’s population, especially those living in the dry and poor western part of China. PRC-GEF Partnership on Combating Land Degradation in Dryland Ecosystems is the first agreed partnership between the Chinese Government and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) on combating land degradation. It aims to use the Approaches and methodology of integrated ecosystem management (IEM) to combine the ecological, economic and societal purposes in western China and extend the application and demonstration in this regard, so as to realize poverty alleviation, and land degradation combating and biodiversity conservation and to achieve the multi-layer and cross-sector regional, national and global benefits.

With phased results achieved, PCR-GEF Partnership on Land Degradation in Dryland Ecosystems is on going well. A workshop jointly hosted by the State Forestry Administration, Ministry of Finance, GEF and ADB will be held in Beijing on 6-7 November 2008. The purpose of this workshop is to present results achieved in the first phase of the Project, to learn from and share with other countries the experience and results achieved in land degradation control, and to strengthen and consolidate the development of the Project and coordination with other Partnerships to enhance global land degradation control efforts and global environmental improvement.
